The author introduces the notion of a tree martingale in a noncommutative probability space and proves the Burkholder-Gundy inequalities for tree martingales in symmetric operator spaces. The results are noncommutative versions of those presented in Chapter 4 of \textit{F. Weisz} [Martingale Hardy spaces and their applications in Fourier analysis. Berlin: Springer-Verlag (1994; Zbl 0796.60049)].
