Considering a special sequence of Appell polynomials, it is proven that its generating function has the following properties: it is logarithmically convex and has connection with the modified Bessel function of first kind of order zero, and with the index of coincidence for Poisson distribution. Some specific approximation properties of the corresponding Jakimovski-Leviatan operators are also obtained.
