The author describes a simplified approach to the problem of existence of symmetric solitary wave solutions of the system for water waves when capillary and gravity effects are taken into account. This approach consists in a direct analysis of the problem in the so-called Zakharov-Craig-Sulem formulation, and application of fixed point arguments.
