Due to the conservation of energy, the author describes how the electric dipole polarizability of a small lossless particle lies on a circle (in the complex plane). Several relations between the particle and the circle are exposed, and different models are compared. For instance, in case of dissipation in the particle, it is concluded that the polarizability volume lies asymptotically on a smaller polarizability circle (which has the same center as the polarizability circle).
