The design of sliding mode observer-based fault detection methods is considered taking into account measurement noise and uncertainties, for systems which are linear in the state variables and nonlinear in the system output. A sliding mode observer is introduced and the behavior of a threshold on the equivalent output injection is discussed. Sufficient condtions are found such that a fault is detected within finite time. An example is presented.
