This article consists of personal recollections of the author, a math school teacher who has been active in the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) since the 1980s and in 2013 received the AWM Service Award for helping to promote and support women in mathematics. She got in contact with AWM because she let her students (seventh and eighth graders) learn about biographies of (male and female) mathematicians and for that used material provided by AWM. As a member of AWM she was part of a delegation of women in mathematics from the US who visited China in 1989. This was a starting point for her to actively work for AWM, e.g., as a panelist representing the perspective of a school teacher. In 2000, she founded the Somerville Mathematics Fund in order to support math achievement in Somerville, Massachusetts. They give scholarships to students and fund teacher-initiated projects that promote instructional innovation and family engagement in math education. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1485.01005].
