The authors study local-in-time solvability of a dispersive, fifth order equation of the Korteweg-de Vries type, the so-called, Kawahara equation. The framework is the scale of Sobolev spaces over a finite interval, and the boundary conditions are defined by quite general (fourth order) linear operators with time-dependent forcing. The analysis of the linearized problem, including Kato type smoothing properties, is an essential part of proofs.
