This paper studies the motion of a charged particle in a mildly non-uniform strong magnetic field via the Boris method and a newly proposed variational integrator. Stepsizes much larger than the period of the Larmor rotations are required. Using modulated Fourier expansions of both the exact solution and numerical approximations the authors study a variety of properties including energy and magnetic moment conservation.
