The essay is the fourth part of the series of articles on the development of mathematics in Norway begun by the second author [Zbl 1082.01001; Zbl 1223.01007; Zbl 1456.01004] and is devoted to events in the 19th century. The focus is on the role of the mathematician's professional activity for the legitimisation of the subject, initially primarily through the teaching profession, later increasingly supported by the activity of applied mathematicians. The various activities to reform mathematical education and their most important actors such as Chr. Hansteen, S. Rasmussen, C. A. Bjerknes, B. M. Holmboe, J. A. Bonnevie, E. Holst, O. J. Broch and H. Nissen form a central point of the presentation and show the breadth of mathematical practice that existed alongside N. H. Abel and S. Lie. Not infrequently, their contributions were also linked to questions of the application of mathematics.
