The author considers the Riemann problem for the Euler equations in one spatial dimension for isentropic flow of a compressible gas. The equation of state can be any, the author considers polytropic, pressureless, and Chaplygin gases. Possibility of formation of delta-shocks is shown. The concept of \(\alpha\)-solution is introduced as a distributional solution and conditions of existence of such solutions are obtained.
