Summary: Managing human resources at universities presents a wide range of problems. Academic staff members should be often classified into various categories either according to their type or performance. In this paper, we present three of these classification models using a fuzzy approach. The classification systems will be described verbally by means of linguistic variables and fuzzy rules. The models are, therefore, easy to comprehend even to a non-mathematician. The paper also divides fuzzy classification problems according to their nature in general. For each presented type, recommendations are given in order to solve it reasonably. It will be shown that each of the models presented in the paper corresponds to one of these types. One of the models is currently being used at six universities for the academic staff performance evaluation in the Czech Republic and the applications of the other two models are planned in the future.
