The authors obtain detailed relations between spheroidal and spherical harmonics of the Laplace equation. As an application, the exact solution of the electrostatic problem for multilayer particles with non-confocal layer boundaries is obtained and the Rayleigh approximation is constructed. Approximate solutions are also included and the accuracy of the constructed approximations are discussed.
