The authors show that in an appropriate sense a semilinear elliptic equation is equivalent to a dynamical system. This equivalence is used to apply specific dynamical systems methods coming from the spatial dynamics. In this respect, the existence of a small amplitude solution of a semilinear elliptic equation on a cylindrical domain is established.
