The main result of the paper asserts that for each nilpotent orbit associated to a simple complex Lie group there is an ad-nilpotent ideal which has prescribed minimal dimension as conjectured in [\textit{N. Kawanaka}, Invent. Math. 84, 575--616 (1986; Zbl 0596.20028)]. In type \(A\) the author also obtains an explicit combinatorial formula for this minimal dimension.
