The authors present a formula for the Milnor \(\bar \mu\)--invariants of length \(2k+2\) for links whose Milnor \(\bar \mu\)--invariants of length at most \(k\) all vanish. The formula combines the HOMFLYPT polynomials of knots obtained by certain band sums of the link components corrected by a combination of HOMFLYPT polynomials of certain knots determined by the \(\bar\mu\)--invariants of length \(k+1\).
