The author extends the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore theory of normal operators to the Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations of normal operators. A~new technical ingredient of such a generalization is some \(E\Lambda(\Omega)\) Banach \(\ast\)-algebra, which has surprisingly nice \(K\)-theory.
