A graph-theoretic procedure for determining the generic rank of the product of a number of structured matrices is given. The procedure is based on a result that relates the generic rank of a product to the maximum number of independent information paths in a digraph associated with the matrices of the product. An immediate application of the procedure of the paper is in checking the existence of structurally fixed modes of a system under constrained feedback.
