This impressive review is indispensable reading for researchers in feedback control. In it four design approaches are chosen to convey the richness of content and diversity of style of the feedback renaissance of the 1980s. Section 1 deals with linear feedback for linear plants, where the main task is to design controllers to be robust with respect to modeling uncertainties. When the uncertainties are large, some form of self-tuning or adaptive control is used. Robustness properties of adaptive schemes are discussed in Section 2. Nonlinear design methods must use some simplifications. In the asymptotic approach of Section 3, the simplification is to separately treat the fast and the slow phenomena. In Section 4 the simplification is achieved by a transformation providing an ''external linearization'' of the plant.
