The authors characterize Conway's second simple group, \(Co_2\), by the centralizer of an element of order 3 and certain fusion data. As a consequence of this result, an exceptional case arising in the authors' paper [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 93, No. 2, 325-394 (2006; Zbl 1121.20010)] does not occur.
