In this paper, an analysis of recurrence plots is provided in order to understand the extent to which the predictability of chaotic dynamics emerging in irregular plankton oscillations is acceptable. The authors show results obtained from long-term field observations that are susceptible to stochastic impacts. The way to assess such an impact is studied numerically. The coexistence of noise and chaos largely removes the need to identify the boundary between deterministic chaos and random processes. In the presented numerical results some blurred structures in the recurrence plots are shown, thus representing the dynamics of phytoplankton.
