The authors recognize and appreciate Euler's work on differential equations. Starting from the groundbreaking works of Leibniz, Newton, and the Bernoullis, Euler not only improved many of the results of his predecessors but turned out to be a sparkling source of new differential equations and related analysis himself. His achievements are described in some detail and a `family tree' of developers reveals that many modern developments in differential equations can directly be traced back to Euler.
