Between 1863 and 1933, the Academy of Sciences of Göttingen published 12 volumes of Gauss' works. The main editors were Ernst Schering and Felix Klein. The paper under review describes the genesis of this work. Gauss' printed works consist of monographs, individual writings, essays etc. Not all of them have been incorporated into the edition. In 1973 [\textit{C. F. Gauß}, Werke. Band I--XII. Reprint of the 1863--1874 original. Hildesheim: Georg Olms Verlag (1973; Zbl 0924.01032)] and again in 1981, photomechanical reprints of Gauss' works were published. Today, also digitized editions of them are available. In 2015, two supplementary volumes [Zbl 1341.01056; Zbl 1416.01038] were published which contain German translations of all the works Gauss published in Latin (Volume 3 appeared in 2019 [Zbl 1418.01042]).
