This paper is devoted to analyzing the correspondences of Placido Tardy and Luigi Cremona. The author notes that the correspondence is useful for understanding the connections between the development of Italian mathematics in the second half of the nineteenth century and the main political issues of Italian history. The analysis carried out is focused mainly on the following correspondences: \begin{itemize} \item[-] The Betti-Tardy correspondence. \item[-] The Cremona-Tardy correspondence. \item[-] The Cremona-Guccia correspondence. \end{itemize} The author proposes the following: ``From an examination of the correspondence, we have identified certain issues that are more significant than others. They are the following: \begin{itemize} \item[-] The planning and foundation of the \textit{Annali di Matematica pura e applicata}; \item[-] The foundation and development of the \textit{Circolo Matematico di Palermo}; \item[-] The discussion among the Italian mathematicians over non-Euclidean geometry; \item[-] The references to the researches of Bernhard Riemann; \item[-] The references to Giuseppe Garibaldi and the wars of independence; \item[-] The references to the politics and organization of the university.'' \end{itemize} The main interests, political positions and roles of Placido Tardy and Luigi Cremona, their contacts with European mathematicians, as well as their lines of research are described. The correspondence analyzed is useful for investigating the human, scientific, and political events related with the mathematical community of the Italian ``Risorgimento''.
