The paper under review is concerned with the so-called \textit{branching problem}, that is the problem of the restriction of representations from a group to a subgroup, mostly in the setup of real reductive Lie groups. The paper surveys some recent advances in understanding the branching problem by several examples. Special attention is payed to the question of describing the so-called \textit{symmetry breaking operators}, that is homomorphisms from the restricted representation to irreducible representations, which is especially relevant in the case of non-unitary representations. Various applications of these questions to the theory of automorphic forms are discussed. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1417.53002].
