Summary: We develop the theory of simple pentagonal subdivision of quadrilateral tilings, on orientable as well as non-orientable surfaces. Then we apply the theory to answer questions related to pentagonal tilings of surfaces, especially those related to pentagonal or double pentagonal subdivisions.
