Let \(A\in \mathcal B(H)\) (bounded linear operator on the Hilbert space \(H\)). The authors investigate when \(A^2\) is similar (unitarily equivalent) to \(A\oplus A\). Some general conditions that are sufficient for these properties are obtained. For unilateral weighted shifts, characterizations of these properties are given.
