A theorem of \textit{H. Wielandt} [Math. Z. 52, 642--648 (1950; Zbl 0035.29101)] says that an indecomposable nonnegative matrix, whose spectral radius is equal to the spectral radius of its entrywise modulus, is similar to a rotation of the modulus, with similarity accomplished by a diagonal unitary matrix. The authors obtain an optimal analogue for matrix semigroups. Compact operators are also considered.
