The authors give a systematic group-theoretic method for constructing Bäcklund transformations using the theory of symmetry reduction of exterior differential systems. For the case of Darboux integrable systems, a precise understanding of Bäcklund transformations is obtained. For certain cases, it can be shown that all Bäcklund transformations between Darboux integrable systems are obtained using the approach given here.
