The method of reduction of a second-order equation with periodic coefficients to a system of equations of the first order is investigated. The author uses the approach that van der Pol and N. N. Bogolyubov used to develop asymptotic methods to study nonlinear oscillations. This approach the author applies to a particular case of the Mathieu equation.
