Although the results of this paper have interesting implications in the representation theory of symmetric groups, they are totally combinatorial in nature. An algorithm is given which shows when an arbitrary array of \(n\) nodes in rows and columns can be made into a proper or skew Young diagram by interchange of rows or columns.
