The author studies the notion of a category, \(C\), endowed with a \(G\)- descent datum. This is a category \(C\), endowed with a natural cocycle map to selfequivalences of \(C\). He explains the derivation of the associated descended and split categories. Various sections of the paper illustrate applications to motivating examples such as representation theory, algebraic \(K\)-theory and \(G\)-homotopy theory.
