The paper deals with the existence of positive continuously differentiable solutions for the problems: a) \(y''=f(x,y,y')\), \(0<x<X\), \(\lim_{x\downarrow 0}y(x)=0\), \(y(X)=a>0\); b) \(y''=f(x,y,y')\), \(0<x\), \(y(0)=0\), \(y(\infty)=a>0\), where \(f\) may be singular at \(y=0\). The case where \(f\) is singular at \(x=0\) as well at \(y=0\) is also considered. The tools are the a priori bounds technique and the topological transversality theorem of Granas.
