The author explains how the failure of the system Maple to compute with roots of unity lead him, N. Bergeron and A. Garsia to compute instead (still using Maple) modulo cyclotomic polynomials. These computations revealed new Lie idempotents in the symmetric group algebra, which are \(q\)-analogues of known ones.
