A simple proof of the Hirzebruch proportionality principle for Pontrjagin numbers of non-positively curved locally symmetric spaces is given. Also (non)-vanishing results for Stiefel-Whitney and Pontrjagin numbers of the Gromov-Thurston examples of compact negatively curved manifolds are established. Further, the authors give a constructive proof of a result of Rohlin asserting that every closed orientable 3-manifold bounds orientably. Some geometric corollaries and open questions are mentioned.
