In the first part of the paper, the author develops the self-dual formalism for electromagnetic fields in an isotropic, homogeneous, lossless chiral material endowed with the Post constitutive relations. The second part is devoted to self-dual fields in media with a permittivity variable in a direction. As an application, harmonic plane waves in ionosphere and in a medium with periodic permittivity are considered.
