Summary: The paradoxical partition of unity of a discrete hypergroup is defined. It is shown that a discrete hypergroup is amenable if and only if it admits no paradoxical partition of unity. We introduce the Tarski number for discrete hypergroups and present a constructive way to compute an upper bound for this number.
