This paper argues that, according to John Buridan, truth-bearers are not sentence types, nor sentence tokens plus facts about the context of utterance, but statements. These are taken to be what signifies a mental sentence coupled with the speaker's intention to refer the verb to a specific time or period; but the paper does not explore how either mental sentences nor speaker intentions are to be understood by post-medieval logicians.
