Mathematical models are developed to study dialect maintenance through exploring persistence of two adjacent and acoustically distinct bird populations, where the primary factors affecting the dialectal dynamics are incorporated in a particular way. It is shown that a combination of little dispersal and strong assortative mating ensures dialects, and that a nonlinear learning facilitates the dialect maintenance compared with a linear frequency-dependent learning rule.
