The author catches the curiosity of the reader from the start by presenting pattern recognition examples that are further tackled: speech, writing and biological sequences. The book has three parts. The first one presents the theory behind the Markov chain and hidden Markov models. It also contains an introductory section that prepares the reader to understand the statistical concepts involved in the presentation of the models. The second part deals with the practical side of the Markov models, i.e. the configuration of the approaches with regard to specific application areas or the robust estimation of the involved parameters. The third part presents the characteristics of the most acknowledged systems in conjunction with the three pattern recognition examples that are pursued throughout the book. The book is highly appropriate for researchers and practitioners dealing with pattern recognition in general and speech, character and handwriting recognition sequences, in particular. For the first edition see [Zbl 1131.68087].
