The bending problem for a magnetostrictive film-substrate system with an arbitrary film-to-substrate thickness ratio is solved by using the basic mechanical equilibrium equation. Further, the ways to optimize the bending characteristic of the cantilever system are studied. The authors examine the influence of Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and geometric parameters of two cantilever components on the free-end bending deflection. The results indicate that, if the substrate thickness is kept constant, the maximal film-to-substrate thickness ratio corresponding to the maximum deflection will decrease with the increasing stiffness ratio.
