J. Tits constructed exceptional Lie algebras. In another paper, he classified simple algebraic groups and their indexes (i.e., Dynkin diagrams with additional information describing the action of the Galois group). The present paper connects these two papers of Tits by computing the indexes of Lie algebras of type E\(_6.\)
