The authors study the singular limiting behavior, as the Rossby number goes to zero, of the so-called primitive equations of the ocean. They prove that the singular limit (when the Rossby number tends to zero) of the primitive equations can be approximated by the higher order quasi-geostrophic equations up to an exponentially small error.
