The book under review ist an unaltered reprint of the volume of the 1983 seminar notes from the University of Bern [\textit{A. Borel} et. al., Intersection cohomology, Prog. Math. 50 (1984; Zbl 0553.14002)] in the series ``Modern Birkhäuser Classics'', which makes a selected number of landmark books available to a new generation of mathematicians. Since the volume is reprinted in its original form, we may refer to the comprehensive original review of C.T.C. Wall, especially since it has not lost any of its significance in the course of more than twenty years. We may just note that the book is still a good choice for first steps into intersection cohomology, and that there are few newer expositions available, with the notable exceptions of \textit{A. Dimca}'s ``Sheaves in topology'' [Universitext. Berlin: Springer. xvi (2004; Zbl 1043.14003)] and \textit{F. Kirwan}'s and \textit{J. Woolf}'s ``An introduction to intersection homology theory. 2nd ed.'' [Chapman \& Hall, (2006; Zbl 1106.55001)].
