An elementary proof of the classification theorem for finite nonmodular quaternion-free \(2\)-groups is presented. The proof is long and very involved. Note that there are some gaps in a related paper [\textit{B. Wilkens}, J. Algebra 258, No. 2, 477-492 (2002; Zbl 1022.20007)], devoted to the same theme.
