The authors construct an Einstein-scalar field theory in \(d+2\) dimensions, where \(d\) is the number of observed spatial dimensions. The Lagrangian contains different curvature-nonlinear terms and some of the dimensions are of Kaluza-Klein type. Thick brane world models are then considered, with both decreasing and increasing warp factors. For massive and massless scalar fields, the trapping problem is studied. Finally, the authors calculate approximative expressions for the gravitational field acting on the matter living on the brane.
