On the spectral and mixing properties of rank-one constructions in ergodic theory (Q2477459)

Introduction: The purpose of this paper is to construct mixing automorphisms of a Lebesgue space whose symmetric powers have simple spectra. The construction uses the so-called staircase constructions and their generalizations. From a more general point of view, these are special constructions of rank-one transformations. The mixing automorphisms are obtained as limits of nonmixing constructions, and the limit construction inherits the spectral property mentioned above. A new class of rank-one transformations with mixing property is considered.
