The paper considers the proton-neutron interacting boson model (IBM-2) in which proton pairs and neutron pairs are dealt with as if they were distinct constituents. The model is defined, phase structure for an essential Hamiltonian and a general Hamiltonian are characterized and the transitions between the different regions of the phase diagram are discussed.
