The authors propose a smoothing method for constructing discontinuous curves and surfaces from Lagrangean and tangent data. This method is obtained by adapting the theory of smoothing variational splines to include tangent conditions and discontinuities. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by a convergence result, as well as by numerical and graphical examples.
