Gelfand's matrix method of constructing Casimir elements by means of characteristic polynomials using the generic matrix of the standard representation was developed in [\textit{I. M. Gel'fand}, Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 26(68), 103--112 (1950; Zbl 0035.30001)]. In the paper under review the author briefly reviews some recent work on matrix procedures that generalize this method for various types of Lie algebras, especially inhomogeneous Lie algebras. As an application, it is shown how these generalizations can be applied to determine the missing operators in the missing label problem.
