Mehmet Nadir (1856--1927) occupied a chair at Istanbul university from 1919 until his death. He wrote a textbook that dealt with the classical concepts of number theory. During 1900-1914 Nadir sent to l'Intermédiaire des Mathématiciens (Paris) answers to 36 problems on Diophantine equations mainly. Two of them were mentioned in L. E. Dickson's ``History of the Theory of Numbers'' (1920). The present author reviews a forgotten name of an amateur mathematician and professional educator and reported the results of his search on life and activities of Nadir in a book in Turkish (1997). The paper under review is a brief summary of this survey.
